Phong Nha - Ke Bang from Da Nang: Quang Binh's Majestic Kingdom of Caves

10 min 12301

Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park (Quang Binh Province) is a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site, renowned for one of the planet's most spectacular limestone cave systems — including Son Doong, the world's largest cave. From Da Nang, it's a rewarding 2-day, 1-night exploration.

The Distance from Da Nang

Phong Nha lies about 270km north of Da Nang, roughly 4-5 hours by car along National Highway 1A. Given the long drive, it's best to set off early in the morning, take a midday rest along the way (Dong Ha, Quang Tri), and arrive in Phong Nha by early afternoon.

Phong Nha Cave — Exploring by Boat

Phong Nha Cave stretches over 7km and is explored by boat along the Son River, which flows underground through the mountain. You glide past colossal stalactites shimmering under the lights. It's one of Vietnam's most beautiful river caves, suitable for all ages.

Paradise Cave — An Underground Palace

Paradise Cave runs up to 31km long (visitors explore the first 1km), dubbed an "underground palace" with a ceiling soaring to 100m and surreal stalactites and stalagmites. A system of wooden walkways and lighting makes the visit easy and safe.

💡 Tip: Bring grippy shoes and a light jacket — caves are cool inside, with many steps. Paradise Cave has a steep walk from the car park up to the cave entrance.

A Suggested 2-Day, 1-Night Itinerary

  • Day 1: Depart Da Nang early, arrive in Phong Nha by early afternoon, tour Phong Nha Cave by boat, and stay overnight in Phong Nha town (riverside homestays along the Son River are wonderfully peaceful).
  • Day 2: Tour Paradise Cave in the morning, have lunch, then return to Da Nang in the afternoon.
ℹ️ Note: Entry tickets: Phong Nha Cave about 150,000 VND plus the boat fee; Paradise Cave about 250,000 VND. Book ahead during the summer peak.

Why Choose a Private Car?

With 270km each way across several provinces, a private car with a driver lets you control your schedule, rest comfortably, and stay safe on the long road. The sites in Phong Nha are also spread out, so having your own transport is very convenient.

The first time I rode a boat into Phong Nha Cave, I felt I'd entered another world — silent, mysterious, and breathtakingly grand.
